Chalki Island

Chalki is a small island in the Dodecanese, west of Rhodes. There are several versions of the origin of the name. Maybe it comes from the copper processing workshops, or from the Phoenician word “Harki” or “Kalkhi”. The ancient Greeks called it Chalkeia and the sailors Harkia.

According to mythology, the Titans were the first inhabitants. Historically, Chalki was inhabited by the Pelasgians, the Carians, the Dorians and the Phoenicians. In the following centuries the island was occupied by various forces, until in the 7th century the island was occupied by the Arabs until 825 AD when it was liberated. In 1204 AD the Venetians and Genoese arrive on the island.

During the 14th century, the Knights of St. John of Rhodes granted Chalki as a fief to the Assanti family, who also built their impressive Castle, on the ruins of the ancient citadel. In 1523 Chalki was conquered by the Turks and held until 1912, when it was occupied by the Italians. From the middle of the 19th century, the Turkish-occupied Chalki reached its peak. Sponge fishing is flourishing, as in all the islands of the region. The educational level rises sharply. In the last years of Ottoman rule and Italian occupation, trade and sponge fishing were affected, and immigration began. Chalki is integrated in Greece together with the rest of the Dodecanese, in 1948.

The only settlement of the island, Chalki or Nimborio is built amphitheatrically around the port. The traditional stone houses, two-story and three-story, with the characteristic small balconies, the stepped terraces, the domes, the colored windows and the tiled roofs, led to the characterization of the settlement as traditional. The Municipality became honored. Today Chalki is a growing alternative tourist destination for nature lovers and tranquillity.
